Papilio hermeli and Papilio lowi

Another Swallowtail butterfly I found out about today. Here are some pictures of this beautiful species. They're over 700 species of Swallowtail butterflies and all of them ( IMO ) are stunning in some way. Another Swallowtail butterfly that I found out about is Papilio lowi. A beautiful swallowtail butterfly IMO.

Here is a picture of P. lowi. A male. I'll try and find some decent info on them.

Interesting insects

Here is the source of the Treehopper mimicking fly! Amazing right?

And I was once a firm believer that ALL damsel flies didn't have their wings fully spread. How wrong I was!

Sooooooo happy that I learned something new! Aren't you? More soon. No use posting photos this time!

Strange Fly

Yes this is a fly. Strange right? I know. The site I got it from ( I'll post the link tomorrow ) said it was mimicking a treehopper! I don't know why it would do that since treehoppers don't really have that many enemies. I gotta look into that. But I can't really do that now because it's late so expect some stuff on this post and on the one tomorrow tomorrow.

White Widows

Latrodectus pallidus The White Widow spider. First thing I said when I found out about these just a few minutes ago on the Venom List ( a forum about venomous creatures mainly arachnids and other venomous invertibrates ) that I'm a member of was "You're joking!" I did a Google search and sure enough came up with the photo and the links below:

Info and links to pictures:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latrodectus_pallidus#_note-2

There you go! The proof that they exist and that the photo wasn't a hoax. The link to where I got the photo from is included in the link above. Enjoy!

March Flies

Don't know why they're called "March" Flies but I do know that they're related to horse and dear flies all of which the females loooooooooove blood from warm blooded animals particulary horses, deer, and *gulps* humans!..... LOL! But seriously you don't want to get bitten by these or even experiance the begining of it.

I know because I've been almost "completely" bitten by these flies at camp. At the pool at dear flies are EVERYWHERE! and you have to keep dunking under water on certain days to avoid getting bitten. I got some more info on the March flies that live in Australia. But they're just as bad in any area. This is the site I got the picture from containing the Flower Feeding March Fly ( Scaptia auriflua ) from. The males feed on flower nectar ( note that this true for all species AFAIK ).

Happy Valentine's Day!

First thing that probably pops into your mind when you're looking at Pink Katydid is "It's real right?" well yes it is real! 100% real. I found it while searching for pink insects. I knew about these for a good while because I'm a member of Bugguide and I've seen quite a few interesting looking insects on the site and in person, but I've never seen these in person. I hope I will because pink is one of my favorite colors.

Any way as I was searching some more on Bugguide I found out that these types of Katydids also come in red! Can you believe that! Here is the proof. Look above! I don't lie! I didn't know that they also come in red! I learned something new today! And here are some links to the pages that I got the photos from:

Assassin Spiders

Assassin Spiders are some of the most strangest creatures I ever came across on the internet. I remember coming across an article on them via an insect forum I'm a member of. At first I thought it was some kind of joke when I first saw a picture of one of the nine newly discovered species of Assassin spiders. They said "Nine newly discovered species of Assassin Spiders". So does that mean that they're others out there?

If so how come I've never heard of them until now? I remember thinking that and so many other questions in my mind when I found out about them late last year. After reading the article about them I went crazy trying to find out as much as possible about these spiders. ( This includes pics ). When I did get search results they had only 2 pictures of them. One of them was repeated like a 1000 times and the other one only a few.

This site has a pic of one holding it's pray which is obviously another spider hence its name. So today I decided to go fishing for some more info on them since it's been months since they've been discovered. I found pretty much the same things about them. I want to know about the other species ( if they're are any ) that were apparently "known" before the discovery of the 9 new species.

Any one out there that has further info on these awesome spiders please let me know! Thank you!

NZ Insects And Butterflies

I got 2 emails today from a friend of mine containing a list of New Zealand's butterflies. Also including 2 of her favourite insects. One of these is another Vanessa species too! But the strange thing is when I did a Google search on them it said it was a Red admiral! When the Red admiral's scientific name is V. atlanta! Which got me thinking it must be the New Zealand red admiral because I remember coming across a few sites that had it on there. I'm not sure of the Latin name though.

I'll look into that as well and will get back to you. I'll also update this post tomorrow with the list butterflies my friend sent me. It's late and I've got dinner to eat and then BED! =)

Links!

I found some really cool links on Butterflies and Moths! The first one is awesome! It has pictures of both moths and butterflies and the larvæ and some of the cocoons and pupae.

I love this site so much! I'm putting it in my favorites. I also added some of the photos they have there to my personal collection of insect and spider photos:

Here is another one with butterflies from Venezuela. These are some beauties!:

www.butterfly-guide.co.uk/venezuela

I also found out about a new species of butterfly ( well it's new too me ) called Vanessa myrinna. Now that is what I call a jackpot! I'll post some pics of one tomorrow along with a list of other Vanessa species.

Pretty Moth

I've only seen this one once. But for me it was a special moment. I saw this on the porch of the bunk when I was at camp at night. It was beautiful. I hope I see another one this year. And this year I'll have my camera ready! It's called a confused Haploa Moth ( Haploa confusa ). I've seen other Haploa moths but I've only seen one of these. And they're so pretty.

EDIT: I got the picture up due to the fact that one of the people from the DSL company fixed the problem with the internet cutting of when my mom is on the phone.
